ReMeth project explores the potential of methanol for inland shipping.
WIC-member De Vlaamse Waterweg, in collaboration with the ‘Research Center for Sustainable Industry’ at Karel de Grote University College (BE) and shipowner Illitrans, is launching the pilot project "ReMeth." ReMeth involves installing a dual-fuel methanol injection system on a marine generator, with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as the primary fuel.
Methanol is already frequently used for maritime transport. However, it is still relatively unknown as a fuel in inland shipping, leading to many questions within the sector about its implementation. ReMeth will therefore measure real emissions under real conditions on board to assess methanol's potential for inland shipping. Sounds promising!
Currently, methanol (grey) is produced by heating natural gas or biomass, but e-methanol (green) can be made by combining green hydrogen with captured CO2, making it a CO2-neutral fuel. The project aims to reduce those emissions of CO2 and particulates, providing an affordable alternative for greener inland shipping.
The first trip is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026. Bon voyage!
