Largest reserve of white hydrogen discovered in France

They call it the ‘hydrogen jackpot’ themselves. Natural hydrogen discoveries—also known as white hydrogen—continue to make headlines in France. After an initial find in May 2023, a more recent discovery in March 2025 has further fueled excitement. The 2023 deposit, located in the abandoned mines of Lorraine, was estimated at 46 million tons of natural hydrogen—one of the largest known reserves in Europe, representing nearly half of the world's current hydrogen production. The March 2025 announcement revealed an additional deposit of similar scale near the Moselle region, valued at approximately 85 billion EUR.
