“The government will promote all forms of low-carbon hydrogen production”

Strong words and good news for the hydrogen sector in Belgium—the new federal government agreement explicitly recognizes the importance of hydrogen. This is a significant step forward for the industry and a confirmation of Belgium’s ambition to become a key hub for hydrogen and its derivatives.

The government commits to developing the necessary hydrogen transport and storage infrastructure in collaboration with regional authorities – including the building of the hydrogen backbone.

Additionally, the new federal government will push for a broader and more flexible approach to RFNBO targets, allowing other forms of low-carbon hydrogen to play a role in making industries more sustainable. The implementation of the REDIII directive will proceed with a clear obligation and without restrictions on the use of RFNBO hydrogen as an intermediate product, ensuring a pragmatic and forward-looking regulatory framework.

We look forward to working closely with the new government to turn these ambitions into reality and strengthen the industry clusters’ position in the hydrogen economy.
