Transforming Fos Tonkin with Tractebel: France’s upcoming low-carbon ammonia hub

Part of the Fos Tonkin LNG terminal, near Marseille, is being repurposed by Elengy. A former LNG tank will be replaced by a 30,000 m³ ammonia tank, allowing the terminal to import, store, and distribute 200 kilotons of low-carbon ammonia annually. The new terminal will distribute ammonia via train, truck, and pipeline to industrial sites for hydrogen production, with plans for ship export as well. This project will contribute to decarbonizing industries in southern France, particularly in agriculture, chemicals, refining, and heavy mobility, supporting broader energy transition goals.

Tractebel led the pre-FEED studies, with support from their Antwerp consulting subsidiary  IMDC for marine engineering and Dutch engineering firm Proton Ventures for ammonia processing. These studies, completed by the end of 2024, helped establish a strong design, covering cost, planning, and risk management. Another great example of cross-border collaboration in the field of hydrogen. Read the full press release here.
