Hydrogen demand taking off across Europe
Already last year, TotalEnergies launched a call for tenders for the supply of 500,000 tons per year of green hydrogen as part of the drive to decarbonize its European refineries. A very important demand side signal for hydrogen. Also in 2024, similar tenders are being launched.
For example, thyssenkrupp Steel has officially launched its call for tenders to supply 143,000 metric tons of hydrogen to its first direct reduction plant. In conjunction with two innovative melters, this is the centerpiece of the first transformation step in thyssenkrupp's decarbonization process as part of the tkH2Steel project. The hydrogen requirement is being put out to tender in a transparent and broad-based procedure, with the aim of operating the direct reduction plant fully on hydrogen by as early as 2029.
Similarly, Norwegian fertilizer giant Yara has signed a binding offtake agreement with Indian developer ACME Group for 100,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia a year from a project in Oman.
