World’s first cross-border CO2 transport and storage facility ready to receive and store CO2

The world’s first cross border CO2 transport and storage facility, the ‘Northern Lights facility’ officially opened on September 26 in Øygarden, near Bergen. The Northern Lights facility is a joint venture between Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies. The Northern Lights facility is ready to receive shipments of 1,5 million tonnes of liquified CO2 per year. The cavern in which the CO2 will be stored is 2,5km below the seabed.  The first shipments are expected in 2025.  This is a very important asset for a number of European low carbon (blue) hydrogen projects that are in development (e.g. H²BE project in Belgium, the blue ammonia project of Yara in Sluiskil..).
