Large-scale hydrogen production in a port environment
Greenports

2018 – 2020

The study project "Greenports" is supported within the call "transition priorities" at VLAIO. It examines ways to convert large amounts of onshore and offshore wind energy, available in a port environment - via electrolysis - into hydrogen (power-to-gas) and distribute it inland for applications in industry or transport.

The aim of the project is to provide optimal technical solutions, as well as to outline economic preconditions and the legislative framework, which enable integration of large-scale power-to-gas installations in the energy system in Flanders / Belgium in an economically feasible way.

The study focuses on the specific case of the port of Zeebruges, but can be translated to other hubs for green electricity and gas.

The role of WaterstofNet

WaterstofNet coordinates the implementation of the study, analyzes the legislative framework for hydrogen production and application and develops a calculation tool that integrates the acquired knowledge within the project. With this calculation tool specific users can compare the cost of hydrogen produced centrally in the port, which is supplied via pipeline or trucks with hydrogen produced on site.
