Roadmap for Power-to-X in Belgium
Procura
2020 - 2025
The PROCURA project (in full: Power-to-X and Carbon Capture & Utilization Roadmap for Belgium) investigates the role of power-to-X in multi-energy systems and markets. Scenario studies around the world show that Power-to-X (gas (e.g.: H2, methane), chemicals, liquid fuels) and Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) could become critical technologies to decarbonise our energy system by 2050 and increase security of supply.
PROCURA wants to create a clear picture of the applicability of hydrogen in the various sectors. Where is it best to use hydrogen directly, and where is it better to convert it first into other synthetic chemicals and fuels, such as methanol, ammonia or synthetic methane? Within the project, various possible solutions are tested for their potential. We also look at scalability of the technology, affordability and the possibility of maintaining a balanced and secure energy system. By the end of the project, a detailed and clearly quantified scenario should be on the table showing how P2X can contribute to the future Belgian energy system - including concrete policy actions to be taken before 2030.
Partners
PROCURA has been running since March 1, 2020 and is sponsored by the federal Energy Transition Fund with a budget of 4.5 million euros. It is a collaboration between the following Belgian knowledge organizations: Imec, WaterstofNet, KU Leuven, VUB, the University of Liège and VITO / EnergyVille.
The role of WaterstofNet
In this project, WaterstofNet provides specific knowledge about hydrogen technology and establishes the link with the relevant hydrogen developments in neighbouring countries.
WaterstofNet also ensures targeted knowledge exchange with other relevant projects - such as the hydrogen import coalition - and establishes the link with concrete developments in Flanders and the Netherlands via the Hydrogen Industry Cluster.
