Converting bus to hydrogen
Hydrogen regio Flanders - South of the Netherlands

2009 -2013
Within the project 'Hydrogen Region Flanders - South Netherlands', VDL has equipped a bus with a hydrogen range extender. The bus refueled at the hydrogen filling station in Helmond and has been demonstrated in this region. The range extender concept has been further developed by VDL on the basis of these tests.
The role of WaterstofNet
WaterstofNet was coordinator of the project.
During the demonstrations, the bus refueled at the WaterstofNet filling station in Helmond.
Outcome
The range extender built by VDL in WR2.0 was a kind of research platform.
The range extender was built in several follow-up versions (smaller size) that were deployed in a number of VDL buses within the 3EMotion project, among others. Here, the large trailer evolved into a smaller trailer with a single axis, which was attached behind an electric bus by means of a tow hook.
The module (without wheels) was also built as a ‘box’ on 2 truck concepts; namely a 19T box truck within the Interreg H2-Share project, as well as mounted in the front part of a trailer in a 44T truck-trailer combination within the Interreg project HydrogenRegion 2.0.
